Turning a box with a loose lid is easy, but making one with a tight-fitting lid is a demanding test of woodturning skill; it's very satisfying when done well.
In this video, Richard Raffan shows you how to sneak up on the perfect fit. The trick is to fashion perfectly mating surfaces in the lid and base flange. They should be tight enough to make a slight air seal that holds the lid down gently, like a magnet, when you pull against it. But they should be loose enough to come apart without rubbing or binding. Raffan also demonstrates several useful techniques, including hollowing with scrapers, using calipers, and fixing split on the lathe. Running Time 20 minutes.
